Community poetry workshops at M’Wikwedong Indigenous Friendship Centre, Owen Sound
- Penn Kemp: In Calling in the Muse, sound poet Penn Kemp presents the three stages of writing a poem: invocation, expression, and communication. This workshop explores new ways of reaching the source of creativity, evoking your Muse through sound to give form to poetry. Participants will experience the innovative power of sound poetry. Through sounding, we will tap the energy and source of inspiration. Then we will explore finding language to shape the inklings of your poem. Participants will develop an abundance of ideas and images, an enhanced awareness of structure, and more ease and delight in showing or performing work.
- D.A. Lockhart: Our Relations Speak Through Us will focus on creating lyric poetic pieces that find their concrete roots in the earth. The concept here is to craft witness poetry in which the writer learns to approach decolonization and reconciliation with the Indigenous aspects of our shared spaces in Creation. Much attention will be paid to haiku, tanka, and renga forms and how to expand these forms into longer sustained and decolonized vistas afforded by seeing through an Indigenized lens. Contemporary examples of Indigenous poets' work in regards to this will be discussed.
